The Shadow of the Rising Sun

I was a Narrative Designer for The Shadow of the Rising Sun, a historically focused narrative university project.

We chose to create a world that engrosses the player in the historical battles of Sengoku era Japan, providing  memorable historical characters, and weaving personalised stories.

A full narrative design document is available on request.

A sample scene from this project can be seen here.

Character Roster

Maeda Toshiie – The Hero (Player Character)
Traits:

Loyal to his ideals and those who share them, but understands that sometimes he cannot follow through his ideals without causing more conflict and bloodshed. Lives in the knowledge that every great thing is only achieved through sacrifice.

Ideals:

Wants to prevent more of the fighting that killed his father. Believes that the country would be stronger under unified leadership.

Bonds:

Tied to his blossoming family, and the legacy that came before him. He would give anything to keep those he cares for safe.

Flaws:

Too easily will he recognise his past weakness and is therefore prone to submitting to his demons. After the death of his father, suffered from a depression that he kept to himself, only rising above it through his wife’s support.

Background:

Born January 15, 1538, Toshiie is a master of his own fate and a skilled samurai capable of stealth, charismatic speeches and victory in bloody front-line battles. He was trained by his father in the Bushido code and does not falter in his representation of it. Has a stoic and dogged pursuit of his goals as a result of his father’s training.  Outside of his life as a Samurai, Toshiie was well known as a delinquent due to Nobunaga's influence on him. But as Toshiie grew older he became more reserved and stern. Toshiie was a hero to the people of Nagoya, helping them with any small task that he could do during his time away from war. He never once looked back, using the menial tasks as a way to forget about the loss he suffered. While Hideyoshi was known as "The Monkey", Toshiie was known as "The Dog" due to monkeys and dogs never being friendly to each other. As both characters grow they come to respect and befriend each other.

Oda Nobunaga – The Mentor
Traits:

One of the most dangerous Warlords in Japan, filled with a quiet form of violence. Loyal to those who prove their worth to him. He has a soft side that only those closest to him see.

Ideals:

Driven by his goal to strengthen Japan under his leadership, seeing himself as one of a few that could successfully provide unity.

Bonds:

Loves Toshiie like a son, wants to see him reach his potential, fulfilling a secret promise to Toshimasa. Wishes to see those around him do great things.

Flaws:

Known to explode with rage at times, causing fear among many of his men. Those close to him know that above all he holds himself in the highest regard.

Background:

Born on June 23rd 1534, from a young age Nobunaga was regarded as a bizarre person. Nicknamed Owari no Outsuke (The Big Fool of Owari), He was known to run around with other youths from the area, without any regard to his own rank in society. After the death of his father in 1551, Nobunaga was said to have acted outrageously during his funeral, throwing ceremonial incense at the altar. This convinced many Oda retainers that Nobunaga lacked discipline and sided with his softer spoken younger brother, Nobuyuki. This resulted in many feuds between various members of the Oda clan, but eventually in 1556 Nobunaga had a succeeded his father after assassinating his brother when he heard about plans of rebellion.

Takeshi – Drunken Ex-Hero
Traits:

A drunken bandit who will kill all those who stand before him. He has (according to himself) never lost a duel, and will spend his life searching for the one that could best him.

Ideals:

To use any means necessary, no matter how evil, to find the one he is looking for. He would give up anyone for this goal.

Bonds:

Tied to the bandit clan known as the Mononoke, he holds their reputation as his highest priority, the weak should fear its name.

Flaws:

An unrivalled cocksure attitude that rubs all around him the wrong way, Takeshi’s one-minded attitude leads many of the members of the Mononoke to their deaths unnecessarily.

Background:

Born January 20, 1511, Takeshi is a man with a horrific past that he doesn’t mention to anyone. He has spent his later years drinking and fighting for money, often placing himself in situations that look impossible. He has a tendency to appear at random intervals in what seem like compromising positions, ready to fight. Despite his dependence on alcohol he remains a skilled warrior. He will also kill anyone he's paid to kill, no matter their influence or military strength. Takeshi is also in charge of the Mononoke Bandits and is known to recruit young children into his gang, often by force.

Kin – The Messenger
Traits:

Optimistic and hopeful even in the darkest of times. Can come across as naïve from time to time.

Ideals:

Wants to get home to see his family and grow old with them.

Bonds:

Is very close with the other messengers and scouts, and develops a friendship with Toshiie.

Flaws:

Can't make tough decisions or do things that would harm another person. He tends to sympathize with the enemy.

Background:

Kin was born on June 4th, 1535 to a poor family travelling from town to town seeking refuge from harsh weathers and warring clans. One night in a small village in the Owari Province, Kin's parents who had been grievously ill for the last 3 months, died. Sick and alone Kin wandered throughout the province, tired and starving. Kin collapsed in the middle of a road, doomed to die forgotten and abandoned. Fortunately for him Nobunaga's army were returning from the battle of Nagara-gawa, in which they failed to reach in time to reinforce Saitō Dōsan. The troops quickly spotted the unconscious boy and took care of him, feeding him and training him in swordsmanship. He became one of them and by the time they got back to Nobunaga they were like family to him. He enlisted in Nobunaga's army and proved himself a capable warrior. But instead he became a scout and messenger, proving he was capable of gathering intelligence without being seen, and getting messages to commanders of the army, this was especially useful in the Siege of Terabe. Ever since then he has been the main means of communication between Hideyoshi and Nobunaga.

Akechi Mitsuhide – The Traitor
Traits:

Unyielding in his convictions, and unrelenting in his passion. A strategical mastermind who plans moves years in advance.

Ideals:

Would leave a trail of blood behind him to become the emperor.

Bonds:

Tied to his family’s name, desperate to mark his country and make a legacy.

Flaws:

Will let his passion overcome his strategic genius, putting his plans into disastrous territories.

Background:

Mitsuhide (born March 10, 1528) was raised as the heir to a great family, but eventually became indebted to Nobunaga. He wanted to break out of the servitude as his ambitions outgrew those even of Nobunaga. The poor treatment he received shaped the detail of the man. He has a horrific blood-lust in battle, stolen from his innermost desire to be better than everyone around him. He doesn’t trust men that are a lower rank than him as he believes that if given the opportunity they would murder him and take his place due to the power he wields and his relationship with Nobunaga. When not in a battle or on a mission, he can be found practising his swordsmanship on a practice dummy as he is determined to be the very best swordsman that ever lived. Due to his competitive nature when Mitsuhide meets Toshiie (who has garnered a reputation from the Battle of Okehazama), Mitsuhide wants to prove to everyone that Toshiie's success is a fluke, and that he is the best warrior in the army, willing to utilise dangerous plans to do so.

Omatsu No Kata/Maeda Matsu – The Wife
Traits:

Loves Toshiie more than anything in the world. She has a fiery temper and isn’t afraid to fight for her own beliefs. A master of espionage within the clans of Japan.

Ideals:

To help and protect those she loves from harm.

Bonds:

A true matriarch, she loves Toshiie and her family, willing to sacrifice a great deal for their safety.

Flaws:

Can be incredibly fierce and often steps over the lines of a traditional wife and mother, breaking protocol and arguing with high ranking generals to achieve her goals.

Background:

Maeda Matsu was born in 1547, 9 years after her future husband Maeda Toshiie. She was born to a family of farmers, ploughing the fields and feeding the local villages. From an early age Matsu showed her intelligence and her will to accomplish anything she puts her mind to. Matsu is 13 at the time our story begins but by the story's end she is a grown woman, a devoted wife and a loving mother. Because Matsu does not follow the typical roles of women in Japan, she is frequently scolded by men who think that she dishonours her family. This aspect of her personality in turn caught the attention of Maeda Toshiie.

Maeda Toshimasa – The Father
Traits:

The undying patriarch, with a spirit that lives through his children. A force of sheer will on the battlefield, living with honour.

Ideals:

To end the suffering of the generations he has seen through righteous battle.

Bonds:

To protect his legacy himself until his dying breath, and then have his children carry the beacon.

Flaws:

Unable to let those around him live their own lives.

Background:

Toshimasa is a man obsessed with his legacy. As a result, he will not allow dishonour to fall upon his name or any others who are close to him. He is a sound tactician on the field who does not make undue sacrifices and a skilled swordsman who has slain many skilled warriors. Because of this he is respected by all. Has seen great sorrow in his life, with much loss, but has resigned himself to remaining silent about it. He loves his son and wishes that he wouldn't have to fight, but he knows what is required of his son and he knows that his son is more than able to proudly carry on his legacy.

Muramasa Sengo – The Legendary Swordsmith
Traits:

A ghost of a once legendary swordsmith whose sanity has eroded with time.

Ideals:

Wants a champion to collect and use his blades, shedding the blood of thousands.

Bonds:

Is connected to every sword he forged, and wants to see them all claim lives in combat.

Flaws:

His sanity has decayed beyond his death causing what he says to be considered nonsense to those who cannot see him.

Background:

Not much is known of Sengo's family, but at an early age he became the apprentice of the blacksmith Heianjo Nagayoshi who noticed his skills at an early age. In 1501 at the age of 25 he forged his first blade, pouring a sense of rage and madness into its creation. For 29 years he created countless blades but it seemed with each blade forged, he dipped further into his madness. In 1530 it was rumoured he had died after defending himself from 200 mercenaries who were hired by a rival swordsmith. It was reported he personally killed every single one of them, dismembering countless men and covering himself in their blood. He returned to his forge and started creating a sword out of the hate and bitterness, tempering the steel with the blood of the 200 men. He was almost finished when he could feel Death’s cold touch. Slumping to the floor the Legendary Swordsmith died. When he did not finish creating his last blade, his spirit remained in the mortal realm, waiting for a great man to forge his last great sword.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Kinoshita Tōkichirō) – The Battling Monkey
Traits:

A talkative and light-hearted, but brilliant man with grand schemes. Always has a plan and never backs down from a fight or an argument.

Ideals:

To unite the country under a new, strong leadership.

Bonds:

Once he became a Samurai he decided he would no longer have any kind of bond with anyone, as he thought it could be used against him and lead to his downfall.

Flaws:

Every great act he is a part of only feeds his ego.

Background:

Born on March 17, 1537, Hideyoshi is constantly playing the fool, but he knows exactly what he’s doing, allowing everyone to play into his hands nicely. He has a desire to live in a higher class than that in which he was raised, but still sees those below him as weak. He was raised as a farmer’s boy until he became a page and rose through the ranks only through hard work. Although Hideyoshi does have his own agendas, he will drop them immediately if they conflict with the greater cause of uniting Japan, as that is his top priority and something he wishes to see with all his heart.  Hideyoshi also well known for being talkative and easy-going.

Tokugawa Ieyasu – The Great Gongen
Traits:

Well known for his patience. An extremely loyal person who can be both bold and careful at the right times.

Ideals:

Wants to unify Japan and become the new Shogun.

Bonds:

He has a strong connection to Japan and its people.

Flaws:

Once you have fallen from his good graces there is no going back, he is merciless.

Background:

Ieyasu was born on the 31st of January, 1543. He is a serious man who does what is required of him in service of Japan. He can show compassion, but he very rarely does. He has a great strategic mind and despises people who waste his time. Ieyasu does not like being told what to do, he needs to feel in control of every situation. Because of this he thinks he should be Shogun and that only through him can Japan finally unite and enter an age of prosperity.

Mori Ranmaru – The Loyal Attendant
Traits:

Excellent swordsman for someone so young, highly respected by many, especially Nobunaga. He doesn’t speak much.

Ideals:

To see no harm come to his Lord, Nobunaga.

Bonds:

He loves his comrades and his lord.

Flaws:

He can be naive and often lets his heart rule his head.

Background:

Born in 1565, Mori Ranmaru was an attendant of Lord Nobunaga, who taught him how to fight from a young age. When we first meet him he is 10 years old, and is just learning how to wield a blade. Although he is a beginner, he is naturally gifted with the use of katanas. Ranmaru is brave and loyal, traits not often found in someone so young. This is why he was chosen by Nobunaga to be his attendant, as Nobunaga knew that Ranmaru would serve him well.
